Rendering Unconscious welcomes Dr. Matthew Flisfeder to the podcast!

Dr. Matthew Flisfeder is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Communications at The University of Winnipeg, where he teaches courses on Communication Theory, Popular Culture, Critical Theories of Discourse and Ideology, and Critical Studies of Social Media. He also teaches Cultural Theory in the MA program in Cultural Studies, and supervises Directed Readings and Special Studies courses on cultural/critical theory, media and communication theory, film and popular culture, social media, videogames, and cyberpunk culture. He is a Faculty Researcher affiliated with the Centre for Research in Cultural Studies (CRiCS) at The University of Winnipeg. He is an Editorial Board member for the journals Rethinking Marxism and TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies.

His new book is Algorithmic Desire: Toward a New Structuralist Theory of Social Media (Northwestern UP 2021). Previous books include Postmodern Theory and Blade Runner (Bloomsbury 2017) and The Symbolic, The Sublime, and Slavoj Žižek’s Theory of Film (Palgrave 2012). I am also the co-editor of Žižek and Media Studies: A Reader (Palgrave Macmillan 2014).
